3 Ways To Protect Your Apartment

Blog

Some renters mistakenly believe that living in an apartment can help to protect them from intruders. Unfortunately, even with the safeguards that come from apartment living in place, you can still be a victim. However, there are steps you can take to burglar-proof your apartment.

Talk to Your Neighbors

One of the best ways you can protect your apartment is to build a relationship with your neighbors. If there is a strange noise or disturbance in or near your apartment, the neighbor is more likely to investigate and call for help if he or she knows you.

Do not limit yourself to only getting to know one neighbor. Take the time to introduce yourself to everyone in your area. You can also offer to watch out for their apartments in exchange for them doing the same for you.

You can also call upon your neighbors to help make it look as if your apartment is still occupied if you are planning to be away for an extended period of time. For instance, you can ask the neighbors to pick up your mail and turn on lights for you so that burglars are less likely to think your apartment is empty.

Install a Security System

The idea of a security system in an apartment might seem unnecessary, but if you want to protect your possessions, it is very necessary. You do not need an overly complex system in place. A security system consisting of motion detectors and a wireless alarm system is often enough.

If you do opt to install any equipment outside of your apartment, ensure that you have permission to place it before doing so. This is especially important if you are planning to install a security camera outside your apartment. Your landlord might be concerned about the privacy of other tenants.

Secure Your Sliding Glass Door

Many apartments have sliding glass doors. Unfortunately, those doors are often an easy way for burglars to gain entry into the apartments. If you have a sliding glass door, simply using its latches is not enough.

The latches can be easily bypassed by lifting the door off the track. With time and effort, a burglar can accomplish this. To prevent this from happening, you need a secondary method of securing your door. Using a charley blocker, dowel, or stick can drastically limit the movement of the door when it is closed and keep intruders from pushing it off track and gaining entry into your apartment.

Keeping Your Business Safe

When you start a business, it's easy to forget about insuring your entire building and all of your inventory. Unfortunately, I made this mistake, and I ended up paying for it dearly when our place was robbed a few months after our store opened. I knew that I had to do something to improve our future security, so I contacted a business that offered locks, keys, and safes. They came out, rekeyed our entire building, replaced our safe with something that was a lot sturdier, and gave us all electronic codes to the keypads that controlled access to the building. Check out this blog to learn more about keeping your business safe.
