Common Services Homeowners May Need For Their Locks

Blog

The locks for your home will be an important security feature for your property. Unfortunately, you might be overlooking some of the types of services that you may need in order to keep the locks effectively securing your home against intrusions.

Deadbolt Alignments

Deadbolt locks are extremely common due to the security and reliability that they can provide. However, it will be possible for the deadbolt to come out of alignment with the door frame. If this occurs, the deadbolt may be difficult to lock or release, and it may even cause damage to the door frame. A locksmith will be able to realign the deadbolt with the frame. Luckily, this is a type of repair that should only be needed every few years depending on the amount of activity that door experiences.

Lock Upgrades

If your home's locks are many years old, you may want to consider upgrading to modern smart locks. These locks can provide a far larger range of features than an older lock may be able to offer. For example, smart locks can be configured to work with most security systems, and these locks may avoid the need for a key. This is possible through the use of combinations or even biometric systems to allow you to release or activate the locks at will.

Key Duplication

For homeowners that have traditional locks that require keys, it can be easy to lose the keys or let them suffer damage from warping. If this occurs, you will need to have new keys made. Unfortunately, if you do not have another copy of your key, you may need to arrange for a locksmith to visit your home so that they can create a new key that will work with your locks. While this can be more expensive than having a duplication made of a key that you already have, it will be less costly than needing to replace or completely rekey the locks.

Basic Lock Maintenance

There is some basic maintenance that can benefit your home's locks. This will include lubricating the moving components and cleaning the lock to remove any dirt, grime, or other substances that could have gotten stuck in it. A professional locksmith will be able to complete a thorough servicing of the lock that may even involve partially taking apart the lock so to reach the internal components. Due to the fragile nature of the lock's internal components, you should avoid attempting to do this work on your own locks as you could easily cause damage that will prevent them from functioning.

Keeping Your Business Safe

When you start a business, it's easy to forget about insuring your entire building and all of your inventory. Unfortunately, I made this mistake, and I ended up paying for it dearly when our place was robbed a few months after our store opened. I knew that I had to do something to improve our future security, so I contacted a business that offered locks, keys, and safes. They came out, rekeyed our entire building, replaced our safe with something that was a lot sturdier, and gave us all electronic codes to the keypads that controlled access to the building. Check out this blog to learn more about keeping your business safe.
