When To Call A Locksmith To Change Your Locks

Blog

Changing the locks on your business can be time-consuming and technical. In addition, if you are not sure how to do it, the locks can be damaged, so hiring a commercial locksmith to do the work for you can be an excellent alternative to doing it yourself.

When To Change The Locks

The locks on your business can be compromised and need to be changed if an employee left without returning their keys, a key was lost and can not be located, or if someone's keys were stolen. Often there is no malicious intent involved, but someone with a key looking to start a problem could do a lot of damage to a business.

If you recently moved into the building or purchased it, you may have had the keys turned over to you when you closed or signed the lease. Because there is no way to ensure all the keys are there, you should consider changing the locks on the building. Changing the locks is time-consuming, and it can be expensive, but if there is a chance that someone has a key that they should not have, it is essential.

Changing The Locks

A commercial locksmith can change the locks for you to ensure that your business remains secure. The locks on most commercial buildings are designed to come apart so that the locksmith can change the core so you will not have to replace the hardware at the same time.

Some locks are also made to allow the commercial locksmith to pull the core, reset the pins, and make a new key, so you do not need to replace each core. This can save some money but does take some time for the locksmith to complete since each core needs to be reset manually.

If there are many locks on the building, it could take several days to change them all. Therefore, you will need to have the locksmith check the locks to determine if you can reset them or if they need to be replaced entirely before the work is started.

Damaged Locks

Another reason to change the locks in your building involves damage to a lock that a locksmith can not repair. For example, if you need to keep all the locks in the building keyed the same, you may need to have a commercial locksmith replace the damaged lock with a new one and rekey it to match the other locks.

The damage to the lock may be from time and wear, or because someone tried to manipulate the lock and gain entry to the building. Replacing the lock is the best way to ensure that the lock is not compromised and will work properly going forward.

Keeping Your Business Safe

When you start a business, it's easy to forget about insuring your entire building and all of your inventory. Unfortunately, I made this mistake, and I ended up paying for it dearly when our place was robbed a few months after our store opened. I knew that I had to do something to improve our future security, so I contacted a business that offered locks, keys, and safes. They came out, rekeyed our entire building, replaced our safe with something that was a lot sturdier, and gave us all electronic codes to the keypads that controlled access to the building.
